FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

Yes. Customers with grid-connected rooftop solar will continue receiving a KSEB electricity bill. A bidirectional meter records electricity imported from the grid and surplus solar electricity exported to it. Exported units are adjusted against imported units under the applicable net-metering rules. Even when net energy consumption is zero, minimum and other applicable charges may still appear on the bill.

Solar electricity is first used to power appliances within the property. Any unused electricity is sent to the grid and recorded as exported energy by a bidirectional meter. The meter separately measures imported and exported units. Eligible exported units are adjusted against imported units according to prevailing KSEB and KSERC billing rules. Any surplus remaining at the end of the settlement period is handled under the regulations and rates applicable at that time.

Yes, batteries can often be added to an existing solar system. Compatibility depends on the inverter type, system design, electricity usage and required backup capacity. A standard on-grid inverter may need to be replaced with a hybrid inverter, while some properties may use an AC-coupled battery solution. The existing installation should be inspected by a qualified technician before selecting a battery.

Quality solar panels and mounting systems are designed for outdoor conditions, including rain and wind. Their actual resistance depends on the product specifications, mounting design, roof strength and installation quality. Secure anchoring, corrosion-resistant materials, proper cable management and waterproof electrical components are especially important in Kannur’s coastal and monsoon climate.

Solar panels require relatively little maintenance because they have no moving parts. Regular care includes removing accumulated dirt, leaves and bird droppings, checking for physical damage, and monitoring energy generation. The inverter, mounting structure, cables, earthing and electrical connections should also be inspected periodically by a qualified solar technician

Solar panels should generally be inspected every few months and cleaned whenever visible dirt begins affecting their performance. The required frequency depends on dust, rainfall, nearby trees, birds and roof conditions. Use clean water and soft, non-abrasive equipment. Avoid harsh chemicals and do not walk on the panels.

A correctly designed solar installation should not damage a structurally sound roof. Before installation, the roof must be evaluated for its condition, strength, material and available space. Using the correct mounting system, anchoring method and waterproofing measures helps prevent leaks and structural issues. Existing roof damage should be repaired before installing panels.
